“The campy-listening thing, I think, is false. I don’t think that there is any such thing, actually. This happens with age, that at some point you might have told yourself and others that you listened to the Backstreet Boys because it was funny. But in fact, you were enjoying it; it’s just a different kind of enjoyment for you. But I don’t think that ironic-distance appreciation is actually a different or lesser appreciation. I think most of that irony is an attempt to say, “These aren’t exactly my kind of people, and I don’t picture myself sounding like that, but I still like it.” I don’t believe in ironic appreciation. I think if you like something, the core of it is you like it.” —

John Darnielle The Believer - Interview with John Darnielle

-This goes nicely with my beliefs that the term “GUILTY PLEASURE” is crap. Don’t feel guilty about what you like…unless it’s heroin. Feel guilty about doing heroin or meth.

If you say that a Britney Spears song sucks, try and explain that to a teenage girl who heard it at the right time and place in her life. Does that make it HER guilty pleasure? nope. To her it’s just a great song she likes that people might make her feel guilty for later in life.

Working at record stores I constantly came across somebody buying a bunch of stuff saying “I know, these totally suck, right?” Do they? Then why are you buying them? Own it. Don’t care what some 19 year old kid behind the counter who only listens to Rocket From The Crypt and Weird Al let you think you are dumb. He’s the dumb one. He’s me.

Here are some things that people have labeled guilty pleasures FOR me:

Enya, The Wallflowers, NOFX, The OC, Madonna, Pizza. (these are all awesome)

If somebody says something sucks, it’s just because they don’t like it. Doesn’t mean you don’t like it or shouldn’t.

Unless it’s the band SCREWDRIVER, fuck those guys and fuck you for listening to it.

NEW SG Interview: Wil Wheaton – TableTop → suicidegirlsblog.com

As a beloved (and much missed) former Newswire editor, Wil Wheaton needs little by way of introduction within the SuicideGirls community. A revered Star Trek: Next Generation alumni, after his role on the show came to an end, Wheaton turned towriting, carving a significant niche for himself as a geek’s geek in the early blogosphere. He was also one of the first power users on Twitter, and is a prolific poster on G+ and now Facebook (a platform he’d deliberately avoided until recently). Wheaton has also been working as an actor with increasing regularity of late, thanks to reoccurring roles in Eureka, Leverage, The Big Bang Theory, and Felicia Day’s hugely popular web-based show The Guild.

For his latest project, TableTop, Wheaton and Day have joined forces again. The new web series will be broadcast on Day’s Google-funded premium YouTube channelGeek & Sundry. This time Wheaton is also wearing the executive producer’s hat, as well as appearing on camera as the show’s host. TableTop aims to combine the aesthetic of celebrity poker with Wheaton’s passion for tabletop games – something he hopes to instill in even the most reluctant of gamers via the show.

We caught up with Wheaton by phone to talk TableTop. Read our exclusive interview with Wil Wheaton on SuicideGirls.com.

We were discussing homosexuality because of an allusion to it in the book we were reading, and several boys made comments such as, “That’s disgusting.” We got into the debate and eventually a boy admitted that he was terrified/disgusted when he was once sharing a taxi and the other male passenger made a pass at him.

The lightbulb went off. “Oh,” I said. “I get it. See, you are afraid, because for the first time in your life you have found yourself a victim of unwanted sexual advances by someone who has the physical ability to use force against you.” The boy nodded and shuddered visibly.

“But,” I continued. “As a woman, you learn to live with that from the time you are fourteen, and it never stops. We live with that fear every day of our lives. Every man walking through the parking garage the same time you are is either just a harmless stranger or a potential rapist. Every time.”

The girls in the room nodded, agreeing. The boys seemed genuinely shocked.

“So think about that the next time you hit on a girl. Maybe, like you in the taxi, she doesn’t actually want you to.”
