Roger Ailes' Secret Nixon-Era Blueprint for Fox... →
Republican media strategist Roger Ailes launched Fox News Channel in 1996, ostensibly as a “fair and balanced” counterpoint to what he regarded as the liberal establishment media. But according to a remarkable document buried deep within the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, the intellectual forerunner for Fox News was a nakedly partisan 1970 plot by Ailes and other Nixon aides to...

How Corporations Buy Access to Power →
I think you can imagine how a major bank/investment firm like Goldman Sachs can gain access to power. They obviously can make or withhold campaign contributions. They can throw money into political action committees that go after politicians who want to mess with them. They also can offer politicians lucrative six or seven figure jobs should they ever fail to win reelection or want to retire...

Great Moments In Journalism: CNN Brings On... →
This might be the most mind-bogglingly idiotic thing I have ever seen on cable news, and I say that having seen a lot of idiotic things on cable news. CNN has now upped the ante several degrees by devoting a segment about the economy not to unemployment, not to our nation’s financial institutions, but to the question of what if f**king psychics had all the answers? One woman thinks she can...

I haven’t been following this particular story, but I’m a longtime reader and subscriber to 2600, so I offer this rudimentary mirror, since their site keeps going down: LATEST VERIZON DENIAL OF SERVICE ENTERS FOURTH DAY Posted 25 Jun 2011 15:49:51 UTC It seems incredible that we continue to be victimized by either the horrendous ineptitude or the endless malice of Verizon - but...

As you may have heard, Eureka Season 4.5 premieres soon (JULY 11! JULY 11!). Now, newcomers wanting to catch up on the show might feel a little daunted by the fact that there are four seasons of Eureka out there. Never fear. We’ve put...

Unfortunately, not only is the death of a baby Juggalette one of the two or three worst things that happens to Juggalos and therefore no laughing matter, holding a faux Juggalo funeral apparently infringes on the Juggalo brand that Mssrs. J and 2 Dope have labored so intensively to cultivate over the years, leading them to seek their totally wicked, balls-out legal action.

John McCain Blames Illegal Immigrants For Arizona... →
“There is substantial evidence that some of these fires have been caused by people who have crossed our border illegally,” Sen. McCain (R-AZ) told reporters on Saturday at a press conference. “The answer to that part of the problem is to get a secure border.”’ Arizona is in the midst of battling a pair of huge blazes, the Horseshoe 2 fire and the more recent Wallow...

Free Lovecraft eBook Being Sold on Amazon – About... →
On March 1, 2011, I released a free eBook of the complete works of Lovecraft in EPUB and MOBI formats. On March 21, 2011, someone uploaded a copy of the MOBI file (with a different cover and missing the intro) started selling it on Amazon. I didn’t discover this until June 18th, 2011, by which time it had achieved a 5-star rating and a good sales rank. I am very disappointed and wish to a)...

laughterkey: soupsoup: Dropbox Reader is yet another reason for Dropbox subscribers to be more responsible about how they interact with the cloud service. Before the ToS change, the service boasted: “Dropbox employees are unable to view user files.” Now, not only are the files viewable, but with Dropbox Reader, the very fundamental elements of the account are penetrable. Motherfucker.

Digby says: Jack Balkin’s post about the similarities between the Bush lawyer shopping and the Obama lawyer shopping is an important read. The difference between them is that I think Bush manipulated the system to provide the appearance of following the normal process and Obama just said to hell with normal process. The result is the same, but it is surprising to see a Democrat who ran on...
